Starting Your Business on a Budget

Starting Your Own Avon Business on a Budget

Only $25 to Start a Business?

As I am writing this post, I am listening to a video by Lisa Monoson.  She is one of the high up people in the Avon world.  I like listening to her voice and her tips are great. And she also shops on Ebay for labels !  Go figure !  The video I am watching now is how she has her office organized —  — oh I wish I was so organized ! But I digress – yes I will show you how you can start a business on a budget.

You can start your Avon Beautiful Business with only $25.  For $25 you will get 20 brochures (10 for the campaign that you start in and 10 for the next campaign), What’s New Magazines (these tell you what is coming up in future campaigns), an order book, full size products and other Introductory materials.

with Only $15
Contents of the $25 Kit

For Your $25, you also get an E-Store where your business can be open for you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  And with that E-store you also have access to online training that can also be viewed 24/7.

So what’s the catch?

There’s no catch.  You don’t have to have fancy labels or business cards or opportunity flyers.  Just remember to have your name, contact information, and website address on each of your brochures — writing it on the brochures can work for now just be neat!  You are on a budget, remember?  Use your full size products for yourself (you can do your own testimonial), or you can carry them with you so your customers can try them, or you can sell them — it’s up to you — it’s your business!

You are not an Avon Employee

You are an Avon Independent Representative. An Independent contractor who gets her supplies from Avon.  They also charge you taxes which you then collect back from your customer (i.e. you get reimbursement for the taxes you pre-paid).  This means you don’t have to worry about sales tax forms – Avon does that for you.

Now you just have to get out there and start selling.  Avon offers online training and an online office for you.  If you don’t have access to the internet and a computer or tablet or smartphone, see if your friends or family will let you use theirs.  Or you can go to your local library or other place that provides free computer and internet use.  What is better for your budget than free?

There are Additional Costs

But these are up to you as a business owner to decide what you will / will not spend. You wanted to know how to start a business on a budget, remember? For example, There are additional items that you will need to download from the internet and print out for your business that will help you immensely as you start out.  The first one is the head to toe collection that only you can sell as a brand new Avon Independent Representative.  If you didn’t get it in your kit, you can download it here:

Head to Toe Collection
This collection can only be sold by New Avon Representatives in their 1st Campaign

The second thing you need to download is a sheet to help you keep track of your clients and whether you’ve given them a brochure and/or a sample.  After you have a few clients, it will be hard to keep all this information in your memory:

If you have a new HP printer or need to get a new Printer, look into this program from HP:

Instant Ink from HP click thru to get a special deal from HP & Gato
Instant Ink from HP

I have used Instant Ink for 2 years now for my business and for my Church printing.  It has saved me a TON of money.  Every time your printer gets low, it phones HP (over the internet) and tells HP that it needs ink.  No more running to the store.  I would have to get 1-2 of the $25.99 ink cartridges a month.  I believe I had only one month that I spent $36 on the instant ink which (since the cartridges are larger) would have been about $75 if I purchased from Walmart.  This is an affiliate link.

Who to start selling to?

Family and friends are a good place to start selling to, but you will have to add to your client base as even your family won’t be buying from you every campaign.  So while they (your family & friends) are still excited to help you, have them take a few brochures to their work or to their Church.  You may only know 5 people, but if each of those 5 know 5 (that’s 25) etc, etc.

Make sure you carry brochures everywhere you go.  Once your relative/friend has looked at a brochure and placed an order, get the brochure back.  Remember you only have 10 brochures at this point.  However, if you really have a need for more brochures, contact your upline (the person who signed you up or their boss) and see if anyone has extras that you can have or buy.

Your biggest cost at first will be buying those brochures.  And if you work with your customers – tell them you will be back in 2 days to get their order and (since you are new) the brochure.  We also have a link we can give out now so your customer can look at a virtual brochure on their tablet or laptop.

But always be prepared, no matter where you go to talk about your business.  Get an Avon button, pin it on your shirt every time you go out, & wait for people to ask if you are too shy to bring it up yourself.  The majority of people out there Love Avon and are excited to find an Avon Lady.

If you cannot have business cards made or you can’t print them yourself –  find someone who has great handwriting and have them help you write out business cards on some colorful cardstock.  Then carry those around in an envelope in your purse (or wallet) to hand out.

Keep in touch with your upline (the Person Who Signed You Up)

When you place your first order, and you should wait for your upline to help you place your first order so you don’t mess up any incentive Avon has in place for new Avon Representatives.  You can order more brochures for your second campaign (if the 10 included in your starter kit isn’t enough) – but make sure your upline helps you.

Part II – Starting Your Avon Business on a Budget

You Should Have Finished Your First Avon Campaign

You did great, right?  Ok !  Now for some reality . . .  The only thing that is certain, death and taxes.  You have to start keeping track of your receipts (expenses of your business) and income.  If your budget is really tight and you don’t have a computer or access to one, then you need a pencil and paper.  Write everything down that you spend towards your business (expenses), and write everything you bring in (income).  Income – expenses = profit (loss).  For more information about what the US government says is a business expense, check out this link.  An overview about taxes and small business can be found here.

It is up to you and your situation about your tax situation, but at the very least you need to keep track for yourself so YOU can see if your business is profitable or not.  That will help you in seeing where you need to tweak it.

Taxes Are a Necessary Evil — Do your own Research so you KNOW you are doing them right

Avon Specific Bookkeeping Help

Avon also has created a worksheet that could help you keep track of your business expenses by campaign (not by month).  It hasn’t been updated since 2013 (that I could find), but it is nevertheless helpful. And while I am talking about money and keeping track of it — keep your business money separate from your personal money.  If you collect all of your Avon money from your clients as you collect their orders, and you don’t have a separate bank business account, then put it in an envelope system like MoneySavingMom has.

Adding to Your Customer Base

Now you want to get started on your next campaign while you are waiting for your order to come in.  Start thinking about adding customers.  Not every customer will order in every campaign.  They also will not order in every other campaign.  So to have a steady income, you will have to have a large customer base.  This graphic below has some ideas of places where you can leave your brochures:

Suggestions on Places to Leave Your Brochures

Or as I said in Part I of this series, you can leave a card where you have printed the address to your digital brochure.  To get people used to this, be sure to talk to whoever you are leaving the cards with.  Show them on your phone or tablet just how easy it is to see the brochure.

I found this has been one of the greatest recurring expenses of my Avon business, so if you can get your customers used to looking at a digital brochure — you will be much further ahead.

Continuing Education

Your Avon website has several free online courses and webinars in the Avon University that list ways to add to your business.  There are also a lot of Facebook groups where you can interact with other Avon Representatives, both experienced and not, about many aspects of Avon and running / growing a business.

Some examples are, Onward! No Matter What! (Molly Stone-Bibb); Avon Flyers by Alicia; Tuesdays with Theresa (Theresa Paul); Makeup Marketing Online (Emily Seagren), Monday Morning Madness (Lisa Wilber); and many many more.

How to Place an Order without Shipping Charge

Remember the brochures I talked about in the last “Business on a Budget” posting?  If you have an order to place that does not include any Avon products, I have been told that if you call Avon and place an order for only brochures and/or business tools, the Customer Service person can waive the shipping fee.  Please let me know if this works !

Internet Access on a Budget

Ok, but what if you don’t have a computer or access to one or a smartphone with access to the Internet?  We are talking budget, right?  Well, frankly I do not see how you will be able to have an Avon business in the 21st century without some regular access to the Internet.  Avon does have a phone system to submit your orders.  But I don’t know how long this will be in place.  More than likely,  everything will probably end up being digital.  And many of your customers will want to communicate with you either by email or Facebook messaging or by texting.

First you must have a phone.  If you can only afford one phone, you probably need to have a home phone line.  A landline — I know this is very old school.  But this allows you to have a way for your clients to contact you.  You can either have an answering machine (thrift stores should be overrun with these) or have an answering service through the phone company for those times you aren’t home.  In my area, our local phone company offers a basic phone and internet at $45.95 per month.  And remember, part of this cost is tax-deductible as a business expense.

On the other hand, if you have a smart phone but limited or no data plan, many places like McDonalds and other places — think community colleges, hospitals, government offices — have free wi-fi.  BUT remember all the latest data breaches?  Don’t use an unsecured wi-fi link when you access your Avon account or your bank account.  You could also see if any of your friends have internet that they would allow you to borrow.  Many public libraries also have free computers that are hooked up to the internet or you could see if your local community college would let you use their computer lab.  Don’t forget those security precautions.
